Should I take on clients outside of my Niche?

You have spent hours figuring out who your ideal client is.

The worksheets, the online courses.

“Who do I want to serve and how do I find them?” is the question haunting your dreams, am I right?

And you finally have it all figured out, right down to the clothing your dream client wears, what music they love and where they shop.

But then…you get an inquiry from someone who does not check all the boxes in your niche. What do you do?

There may be a few reasons why taking on clients outside of your niche are positive:

  1. You are in the building stages of your business and need the income

  2. You have gotten a great vibe from the potential client and want to work with them regardless of your niche or not

  3. The work may be something in a new direction and it would be a great opportunity to branch out or try something new

  4. You have some extra time and it will not take away from taking on jobs of your ideal clients.

  5. It may help you develop your skills (ie a family photography session may help you practice your client posing for a wedding day)

  6. It could lead to referrals of clients within your niche

Now, in what circumstances would you not want to take on a client outside your niche?

  1. You need the money, but something about the client is making your heart say “no”

  2. You are not confident that you can deliver what they want (due to skills or creative vision)

  3. Time is an issue and you really want to save space for the clients you dream about

  4. You personally know the person asking for your services, and feel bad saying no. (this is a huge one!)

  5. Doing this one job may lead to more inquiries from other people outside your niche, and you may find yourself stuck in a rut doing jobs you do not align with.

At the end up the day, it is best to set some parameters and think about a few things such as how far out of your niche you are willing to go and at what cost.

Will it make you money but cause you stress?

Will it be enjoyable but not profitable?

Are you worried that you do not have the skills to pull it off and disappoint your client (ideal client or not!)

Does it make your heart sing and get you excited to take on?

Ask yourself some hard questions and remember that you do not have to do anything you do not feel aligned with! Your business, your rules!

I hope this helps you make some decisions in your business!
