Owning your own business means making mistakes

Being the owner of your own business means making mistakes….and it sucks.

I have been extremely lucky that for the last 8 years of being a photographer and in business, I can count one one hand how many times I have truly effed up.

But I did tonight. And it feels crummy. And to most people, it would seem like not a big deal but to me, a person who takes pride in how she treats all her clients and potential clients, I feel really bad.

I have been trying to meet up with a potential wedding couple for weeks, and tonight I was finally able. I had planned to meet them tonight after I finished shooting a wedding. They said sure!

So today I sent an email confirming the location and I showed up at 630, waited 45 minutes and left feeling pretty bummed that I got stood up. I even dressed up! But hey, that’s business. (Read my post about the current trend of ghosting your vendors!)

As I roll into my driveway, ready to drive my babysitter home I get a text. “Hey we are here!”.

I check the email I sent today and guess what? I put the wrong time. I feel terrible. I have sent two messages apologizing and no response. My guess is that this relationship is over before it started.

If you are reading this, I am truly sorry and it was an honest mistake. 😕

However, I understand your frustration with me.

So yes, owning a business means mistakes. Small, big..doesn’t matter. They will happen. You will get unhappy customers by no fault of your own and have to smile and make it better. You will forget things, miss an appointment, be too slow at sending products or simply just have clients who do not appreciate you.

Actually it sounds sort of just like life in general right?

My instagram story as I was getting stood up.

Why am I telling you this? Well lately my mind has been on the stories people tell. How so many of us wait until we have reached success to share our story and often that comes with a webinar, or a workshop, or coaching or some way to make money off of it. Rarely do I see people sharing the journey. The mistakes. The bad and the good. So I want to share with others and maybe it will help someone else not make the same mistakes, or be an even better person. ❤

Have you made mistakes in your business? I’d love to hear about it and how you overcame that.
